DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS
------------------------------------------------------------
** Tuesday, 20 August 2025
------------------------------------------------------------
Day 2 of the AfPIF 2025 featured bilateral meetings, networking events and panel sessions on policy and regulation related to digital Infrastructure, the evolving environment for Women in technology and an outlook of Africa’s data Centre land scape.
The Pulse Internet Measurement Forum (PIMF), a breakfast meeting organised by Internet Society, was held in parallel to the bilateral meetings. It gathered public and private sectors players to review and compare data on Nigeria’s Internet resilience compared to its West African neighbors, discussed its strengths and weaknesses, and proposed collaborative measures to improve it.
** REGULATORY PANEL
------------------------------------------------------------
The Regulatory Panel looked at Frameworks for Digital Infrastructure Development in Africa. Moderated by Douglas Njenga (WIOCC), it featured speakers from Nigeria, Kenya, Ghana and Cote D’Ivoire. Discussion centered on developing regulatory frameworks to accelerate the rollout of digital infrastructure across African countries, identifying shared challenges, and exploring cross-border collaboration to enable harmonized regulatory approaches.
** WOMEN IN TECHNOLOGY PANEL
------------------------------------------------------------
Barbara Muthoka (AFCHIX) moderated the all-female panel which included Nikki Popoola (WIOCC), Florence Adeleke (Digital Flossie), Kehinde Bamgboye (Equinix), and Isabel Odida (Gcore). They emphasised that, while the Internet industry is much more inclusive than it was before, more work remains to be done, and they reiterated the need to encourage more girls and women to engage in technology related activities and careers.
** DATA CENTERS PANEL
------------------------------------------------------------
The panel “Africa’s Data Centre Landscape: Growth, Challenges, and Viability” brought together leading voices from across the industry to examine the rapid expansion of Africa’s data centre ecosystem and the factors shaping its future. Moderated by Gbenga Adegbiji (Geniserve), the discussion featured insights from Ayotunde Coker (Open Access Data Centres), Lars Johannisson (Rack Centre), Dr. Krish Ranganath (Africa Data Centres), Nkiru Chime (Ifogora Advisory), and Wole Abu (Equinix).
Panelists explored the continent’s growing demand for digital infrastructure driven by cloud adoption, mobile connectivity, and enterprise transformation, while also addressing critical challenges such as high energy costs, regulatory hurdles, limited access to reliable power, and the need for sustainable growth models. They emphasized the importance of collaboration between operators, investors, and governments to ensure long-term viability, attract global hyperscalers, and build resilient infrastructure that supports Africa’s digital economy.
** GALA DINNER
------------------------------------------------------------
Day 2 concluded with a lively gala dinner by the ocean at Bay Lounge, nestled in the beautiful Lekki neighborhood of Lagos. The evening was proudly sponsored by the local hosts: Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN), Rack Centre, and AF-CIX.
The gala celebrated excellence within the peering community, with awards presented to individuals for their outstanding contributions. The highlight of the evening was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to Mr. Michuki Mwangi from ISOC, honoring his remarkable contributions to the Internet community in Africa.
